The Dog Temperature Range to Ensure Your Pet is Safe
We have all heard stories of pets and children needing to be rescued from a locked vehicle in the summer. What many don’t realize is that in just 30 minutes time, a car in 70-degree weather can skyrocket to over 100 degrees, resulting in heat stroke in dogs. Cold temperatures are just as dangerous, as a car without a heater can turn into a refrigerator. In order to make sure your pup is comfortable and in a safe environment, remember to follow these rules.
The Safe Range
In general, the safest range for a dog in a car is above 32 degrees and below 70 degrees, though you should never leave them alone for more than five minutes. Though cracking a window or parking in the shade can help a bit, it will not be effective against the summer heat for extended periods of time.
If possible, have a passenger stay in the vehicle to operate the heat or air conditioning, or call ahead to the businesses that you have to stop at and ask if they allow dogs. You may be surprised by the number of businesses and restaurants that allow animal companions. It is also wise to just leave them at home whenever possible, and if you are running errands before or after a veterinary appointment, consider bringing them back home before you continue your day.
If you see a pet in a locked car, and the temperature is concerning, or they are displaying symptoms of heat stroke, then you should take action immediately. Begin by taking down the vehicle's information, and approach nearby business establishments to see if they know the owner. If the owner is not located, contact authorities and inform them of the situation, as many states have laws against animal abuse, including endangering them.
Only in extreme scenarios should breaking into the vehicle be considered, as some states would consider that an illegal act. Remember that it is best left to authorities at that point, as it could be dangerous to yourself or the animal. Your priority at that point should be how to cool off the dog and make sure that it receives cool water and that its heart rate and body temperature are lowered as the excessive panting stops.
