If you have been comparing various makes and models in your quest for a crossover that features standard all-wheel drive, there is a good chance that your final decision will be made between two Subaru models. Both the Forester and the Outback are ranked highly in their respective classes as well as receiving top safety ratings from both the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS).
Both vehicles are equally capable as daily commuters or weekend warriors, with all the features you would expect in a Subaru. While the Forester is more of a conventional SUV with better off-road capability and more cargo space than its rivals, the Outback is a rugged, less traditional choice with its cool wagon-style shape and optional turbocharged engine.
For the most part, these two vehicles are similar in many ways as would be expected of two compact crossovers of the same brand. Safe, family-friendly, versatile, practical, and roomy are all words that describe each of these models. Each features balanced driving dynamics, impressive fuel economy, a well-designed cabin, and the latest tech features. Choosing between the two will require you to understand what sets them apart.
The Basics of Each
The 2019 model year brought forth a completely redesigned Forester. The latest generation offers a longer list of up-to-date standard features - including a rear seat reminder - as well as more interior space. The Forester is also equipped with a full suite of advanced driver-assist systems and the latest smartphone app integration.
The Outback, already featuring Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, and the EyeSight safety suite standard, was redesigned in 2020. Improved driving dynamics, an optional turbocharged engine upgrade, increased passenger and cargo space, as well as an available 11.6-inch touch screen were added. In 2021, the Outback is equipped with even more standard safety features.
Seating
Each model seats five people in adult-friendly seats. Moreover, it is not a tight fit to seat five people in the two rows of seating. The seats are both supportive and comfortable no matter which crossover you select.
The Outback is a larger vehicle, even though it is an inch shorter than the Forester. However, the Forester has a slightly larger interior with more overall passenger volume. On the other hand, the Outback offers more upholstery upgrades including water-repellent synthetic leather and Napa leather.
Cargo Space
As we said, the Outback is a bit larger than the Forester, and this translates to slightly more cargo capacity. The base Forester provides an impressive 31.1 cubic feet of room for everything behind its rear seats. The capacity is increased to 76.1 cubic feet by folding the seats down. In comparison, the Outback provides 32.5 cubic feet of room behind the seats, and 75.7 cubic feet with the seats folded.
If convenience is something you are looking for, you might opt for the upper trim on the Forester which offers a power liftgate. But then there is the Outback, which features a hands-free power liftgate standard in every upper trim.
Interior Style and Quality
While the Forester boasts an upscale and attractive cabin, utilizing high-quality materials, the Outback has a bit more of a luxury look. Both interiors are classy and well-built, while upper trims on the Outback offer upscale features and accommodations.
Interior Technology
Both the Outback and Forester come standard with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and Subaru's Starlink infotainment system. The Forester comes standard with a 6.5-inch touch screen, while an 8-inch option is available. The standard setup for the Outback features two 7-inch screens, however, every model above the base model enjoys an 11.6-inch touch screen.
Upscale options on the Forester include an available Wi-Fi hot spot and a nine-speaker Harman Kardon sound system, while the Outback upgrades include a Rockford Fosgate stereo, a 12-speaker Harman Kardon premium audio system, and wireless device charging.
Powertrain
While both these vehicles come standard with a 182-horsepower four-cylinder engine paired with a continuously variable automatic transmission, if you're looking for a power upgrade, check out the Outback. Unlike the Forester, the Outback can be equipped with a 260-horsepower turbo-four that delivers solid overall power. In fact, when the Outback is properly equipped, it can tow up to 2,700 pounds. Conversely, the Forester's maximum towing capacity is 1,500 pounds.
Fuel Economy
Both the Forester and the Outback Provide solid fuel economy - especially for 4WD compact SUVs. The standard engine in either model returns an EPA estimated 26 mpg city and 33 mpg on the highway. If you choose the more powerful turbo-four, the mileage will drop a bit to 23 mpg in the city and 30 mpg on the highway.
Handling
Like every Subaru, both the Forester and the Outback provide a solid grip on the road and offer good off-road capability as well. Additionally, you will enjoy the accurate steering, minimal body roll, well-balanced ride and easy handling. The taller Forester drives more like an SUV than a car - with higher ground clearance than the Outback. Conversely, the Outback drives and rides more like a car than the Forester.
Subaru Safety
Like every Subaru, both vehicles are designed with the safety of you and your family in mind. The Forester and Outback each come standard with a full suite of advanced driver-assist systems.NHTSA gives both the Forester and the Outback an overall 5-Star safety rating, while the IIHS awards these vehicles their Top Safety Pick+ designation - the institute's highest honor. This is why we say, nothing says love like a Subaru.
